I came across this description of implicit and explicit personalization.
Personalization is a regular topic these days. But it’s extremely annoying when people are unable to separate implicit and explicit.

Isn’t the main difference that explicit requires the user to actively make choices on their own while implicit is hidden from the user in terms of changing the settings? That seems to be the main difference to me.

The article is from 2001, and hasn’t really been updated with more recent developments in the market. Passive and Segmented personalisation, for instance.

But the topic is an interesting and very important one none the less. Best reference I found came from http://www.contentmanager.eu.com/personalisation.htm – probably very appropriate for this forum ;-)
