There are a considerable amount of attention-grabbing points in time in the following paragraphs but I don’t know easily see every one middle to soul. There's some validity but I can take hold judgment till I seek out it further. Beneficial article, thanks and we'd like more! Combined with FeedBurner as perfectly.

I'm keen to agree with you Alex (as always) - Umbraco is interesting.

Since I every winter wish I was living in Jamaica instead of Sweden I won't challenge you to a snowball fight (I'll leave that to the danish guys) but if you're ever in Stockholm I'll challenge you to a beer drinking contest instead :)

I've been using Typo3, a php open-source cms for a lot of our clients without Sitecore size budgets. Notably, Typo3 is also Danish! I find that when a cms is free it ends up being useful even on sites that you'd think are two small to need a cms. Sometimes I've used Typo3 just to leverage the registration and login features for a site that isn't going to be edited very little.

I was also just starting to look at Umbraco for that "smaller than Sitecore but still needs to be .NET" hole. I installed it right after 1.0 came out and thought it looked good but incomplete back then but it is definitely time to look again. I built a site in DotNetNuke once but I think it is really focused at a different style of site and was somewhat awkward to extend.

I was very happy with your post and framing :-)

umbraco isn't targeted the enterprise market (whatever that actually is - I'm still trying to find out), among other things we don't have workflow and will never have (we don't believe it works - however we do have advanced permission settings, notifications, etc.).

So I do believe we differentiate from SiteCore in our constant search for simplicity where SiteCore seems to aim for needs of more heavy and advanced features. This is why I think it's a good choice to have both umbraco and SiteCore in your portfolio - I've never seen us as competitors always as two great products the supplement each other :)

In Q1 - sounds like we should arrange a umbraco vs. sitecore snowball fight with Lars Fløe and James Derry :-)

Thank you for the replies :). The trip to Denmark is planned for somewhere Q1(also the coldest time to travel to Copenhagen ;-)). Would be nice to chat with you guys.

Both Sitecore and Umbraco are quite fine CMS's. Looking forward to explore Umbraco a bit more. And as you say, Hartvig, there isn't a solution which fits all... Have to agree with you on that.

But what I wanted to mention isn't that Umbraco IS light-weight, I want to mention that it IS a good alternative for low-costs solutions. But really not limited to low-costs.
I can't really say if Umbraco matches the requirements for 'enterprise' solutions. Sitecore does, in most circumstances(interaction/collaboration with portals, LDAP, adanced search solutions like Mondosoft), that's what I know so far. Maybe the Umbraco architecture is ready for it, but the product is presented to me that way. It's presented as an easy to manage and less complex CMS. But as always, correct me when I'm wrong!

The reason I've selected Umbraco to post about(as others, even non .NET solutions are selected by me) is that you are able to generate layouts in a quick, easy way using XSLT. It definitelly speeds up development. And simplifies maintenance.

Hope this explains why this post is written this way.

Yes, umbraco is a good alternative to Sitecore. Since some of the ideas are the same and both are focused on .net and XML you can reuse a lot of stuff including your .net xslt libraries

Thanks for mentioning umbraco. Being a light-weight and simple alternative to SiteCore is a framing just after my mind. I don't believe the idea of one system that fits all, so I'm pretty sure that in some cases umbraco would be a perfect match instead of sitecore and the other way around.

If you come to Copenhagen to meet the fine folks at SiteCore give me a call and I'll buy you lunch :-)
